Apps didn’t transfer to your new iPhone (or came without their data)
TwinHop team · Updated
After a move, apps are downloaded again from the App Store, and their data goes back into them from the backup. If an app is missing, grey, stuck on “Waiting…” or opens empty, the download or the order of these two steps went wrong. Start with the checks below before you restore anything again.
First: don’t restore again “just in case”
A second restore erases the phone again, including photos and messages taken since. Check the causes below first.
TwinHop moves apps together with their data to a new iPhone, from a Mac or a Windows PC.
Download TwinHopWhy apps go missing or stay grey
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Grey icon, “Waiting…” | The download from the App Store is paused or stuck | Connect to Wi-Fi and power; tap the icon to resume; restart the phone |
| “Not available” / the icon disappears | The app was removed from the App Store or isn’t sold in your country | Search for it in your purchases (App Store → your account → Purchased). If it isn’t there, Apple no longer provides it |
| Asks for another Apple Account password | The app was bought with a different Apple Account | Sign in with that account, or download it again with yours |
| Storage full | Not enough space for all apps at once | Free space; apps continue downloading |

Don’t delete grey icons from the Home Screen: the record of the app goes with them.
Why an app opens without its data
- The app keeps its data in its own cloud. Many messengers, games and banks store your data with their service, not in the backup. Sign in, or use the app’s own transfer (for example WhatsApp’s chat backup).
- The data was never in the backup. Some apps exclude data from backups on purpose.
- Login details didn’t move. Passwords from the Keychain aren’t in an unencrypted backup. The data may be there, but the app wants you to sign in first.
- The app arrived after its data. An app’s data can only go into an app that is already on the phone. If the data was restored before the app was installed, it may not land.
How to get them back
- Apps only, no data needed: download them again from your purchases in the App Store.
- You need the data inside the apps: you need the backup of the old phone. TwinHop installs the apps first and then restores the backup, so the data goes into apps that already exist. If the new phone is already set up, you can add only the apps you pick.
A note on photos when adding apps to a phone that’s already set up: after any restore, iOS may remove photos and messages that aren’t in iCloud. That’s why TwinHop first backs up that phone, so anything removed can be brought back.
